2007 music blog (so far)

I haven’t been up to much over the last couple months. I’ve cultivated a couple serious colds which have laid me out for a few weeks. Luckily there has been some brilliant music out lately so I’ve been immersed in that. So some of you have been subjected to my evangelizing already, for the rest of you:

Grinderman – Grinderman

Dirty Three’s Warren Ellis has a new band with Nick Cave and two other Bad Seeds. It is a slightly different sound, and I think rocking harder than their previous bands. This is the disc I’ve got on repeat, and it continues to rock my world. myspace link.

The Gossip – Standing in the way of control

Is this band hitting over there? It is fronted by this quite fat American lesbian. She was labeled ‘the coolest person on earth’ by the Guardian newspaper over here last year and I ignored it until I heard the single a couple months ago. The songs are very simple, but the energy is unbelievable. If you aren’t bouncing after Yr Mangled Heart and Standing in the way of control… well.. you probably won’t like the rest of the album. They are getting radio play here and selling out gigs. If they come to Vancouver I would say it was a must see gig. Let me know if everyone is already loving them back home. myspace link.

Arcade Fire – Neon Bible

Well at first I was pretty worried about this album but it’s really growing on me. I don’t think it tops ‘Funeral’ but I’m starting to think that is my favorite album ever, so that would be a tall order. If you don’t have Funeral I seriously thing you should download it, listen to it, and if you love it go and buy it.

Amy Winehouse – Rehab (single)

I’m not familiar enough with the whole album (Back to Black) to really comment but the single is very catch. She has been having problems of late (missed two gigs in my hood this week), but the music is good. She has a great voice, very strong jazzy thing going on. myspace link.

Other noteworthy music in my world is Metric. While it isn’t new, it is fairly new to me. I’ve been loving both albums and caught them here last Halloween. They had a great live set, again rocking hard, and the last few shows here have been sold out so I’ve missed them. Definitely worth seeing if you can.

Funnily enough I got a spare ticket to a Nine Inch Nails show last Thursday so I went to my first ever NIN gig. It is surprising it took this long since I had a big NIN phase back in uni (they say uni here, instead of university, but I’m still not cool with it — doesn’t sound right to me ). The show was really kinda great. Sound was so good I had to take my earplugs out ( I’m old ), the music was really tight!

I’m getting really excited about going to the Dirty Three ATP festival in April. Grinderman is going to be performing!! plus Low, Cat Power and loads of other great bands (I guess the Dirty Three and I like the same kidna music!? I’ve met a couple of the guys I’m heading out to the festival with last weekend at a party in Shannon’s rectory. While I was visiting for Christmas my cousin Kat managed to line me up with a ticket to this festival (which was only selling four bedroom berths by that point) with her friend Shannon’s roommate. They seem wicked ( We are looking for a fourth person after one dropped out and Maz said: ‘as long as the person is kinda fanatical about one of the bands they should be ok’, so you can see why I would get along with them :) ).

Nepal is rapidly approaching. I’m off on March 29th for our two week trek, after which you will have to suffer through numerous trek blogs no doubt. Jon is bringing a camera and he is a great photographer so there will be pics, and I’m going to bring a video camera, so maybe there will be some youtube action??

Miss y’all!
